Legal Window Tint in Cave Creek, AZ (2026): What’s Allowed
Ceramic vs Carbon vs Dyed Window Tint: What’s the Difference for Cave Creek Drivers?

In Cave Creek , AZ, tint isn’t just for looks. It helps with bright glare and extreme heat. But before you pick a shade, you need to know what Arizona law allows. The rules are statewide, so Cave Creek follows the same tint limits as the rest of Arizona.
Serving Cave Creek + the whole Valley
Arizona window tint laws are
statewide, so the rules you follow in
Cave Creek
are the same in
New River, North Scottsdale, Tempe, Mesa, Chandler, Gilbert, Glendale, Peoria, Surprise, Avondale, Goodyear, and Buckeye. If you’re anywhere in the
Cave Creek metro area, the VLT limits below are what you’ll be held to.
What does “VLT” mean?
Tint is often sold as a number like 50%, 35%, 20%, or 5%. That number shows how much light is still allowed to pass through the window. Arizona law calls this “light transmission” and defines it as a percentage of total light that passes through the film plus the glass. Higher number = lighter. Lower number = darker.
Front Side Windows(Driver & Passenger)
Arizona allows tint on the two front side windows as long as the film shade is 33%. The front windows can be moderately dark, but not limo-dark. If you go too dark up front, that’s usually where people run into problems with law enforcement.
Back Side Windows & Rear Windshield
Arizona is more flexible on the windows behind the driver and the rear window. The law allows any shade of darker “privacy” tint for these spots, meaning you're allowed to essentially "blackout" the entire rear side of your vehicle.
However, only Arizona allows the rear window to be tinted if your vehicle has outside mirrors on both the left and right sides, positioned so the driver can see behind the vehicle for at least 200 feet using those mirrors. Drivers need to be able to see blind spots, which dark tint shades can impact. If one of those mirrors is missing/broken, the rear window tint can become illegal as a result.
Front Windshield tint
Arizona does not allow dark tint across the whole windshield. What it does allow is tint on the topmost part of the windshield, as long as the bottom edge of the tint is at least 29 inches above the driver’s seat (measured the way the law explains), and the tint is not red or amber.
Medical exemption (if you truly need darker)
If you have a medical need to be shielded from direct sunlight, ADOT/MVD says you can apply for a window tinting exemption. They also note an exemption is only required for tint with a shade less than 33%, and the application must be certified by an approved medical provider type.
Quick Cave Creek tip before you tint
Don’t trust your eyes. Different factory glass can change the final number. A good shop will measure your windows with a meter so you know where you landed. Knowing your shade ahead of time can save you from tickets, fines, or having to remove film later.
